Organic Vs Industrial
InspirationMy piece was inspired by Marcel Duchamps's Bottle Rack piece. When I was first introduced to this project I had been given very few rules or guidelines to abide to the entire time. The main aspect I had to keep in mind was that the title of the project; "Organic Vs Industrial". With that in mind I began experimenting with different ideas, and the first thing that came to mind was creating something with the automotive field, because of deep passion that I have for the entirety of automobilia. After coming up with sketches of of an automotive related piece, I began to do research of what the piece began could be composed of and what items I could utilize. After short research, I was not able to come up with ideas for the base components of the piece. The sketch that I came up with was white I planned on making to the most capable, in terms of details. After putting the automotive related piece to rest, I then looked into other ideas. Fulfilling the title requirements of having an Industrial component with an organic component was becoming difficult. At that point, I then choose to begin looking into artists that were well known for their found object pieces. The first artist that caught my attention enough for me to continue looking into him was Marcel Duchamp, an artist that I had already been familiar with, but not for the piece that I wanted to use for my inspiration. When I had first learned about Duchamp, I had only really paid attention to his fountain piece that consisted of a urinal that he had purchased, then re titled, and then given a different description. After looking into his other well known piece, "Bottle Rack", I had learned that his process for that piece was incredibly similar to that of my Organic Vs Industrial Piece. After discussing the project with family members, we had come up with the idea of using back splash normally used for industrial settings on walls, and then creating flowers using washers and green wire.
Process and PlanningWhen creating the piece, I began with research and sketches of the automotive idea, but after removing that from my options for creation, I'd decided to go with what was essentially was a bouquet of flowers. After deciding that the aluminum back splash should be the core of creation, I went to my local Menards, for the back splash and then purchased washers from Wal-Mart, and the green rods that I had were already in drawer that no one ever opened at home. The first step of creating the bouquet itself was to roll up the the back splash by hand then to screw in bolts in order give the piece the ability to hold itself together, that waty the piece would be able to move around and stand on its own. The screws that were on the outside of the piece were going to be painted because they were silver and at first I was not sure they would look appealing. But after taking a few steps back and looking at it for a moment and watching in shine under the lighting, I had decided that it would do the piece harm to paint the silver screws the color bronze as the back splash itself. Then came the addition of the flowers themselves, first I choose to add newspapers onto which I would add floral foam, which is incredible sensitive, in terms of how the lightest applications of pressure could even cause an imprint of some sort. Using the other end of the screws that were sticking inside the bouquet of flowers, I mounted the floral foam in a way that prevents them from inside movement, which may eventually lead to the foam moving out of place. Then using washers, I put together flower like shapes and wrapped the top parts of the rods and punctured them through the floral foam, and because of the lack of weight of the rods, they didn't cause the floral foam to move either, while at the same time keeping the rods themselves stable.

Title: Metal Perennials
Medium: Industrial Found Object Pieces March 2016 My piece, Metal Perennials was created with the use of industrial materials, inspired by Marcel Duchamp, an artist famous for re purposing found objects and giving them the ability to attain a completely different element about them. Inspiration was taken from his specific piece, "Bottle Rack". My piece is composed of entirely found objects and none of the original components have kept their original purpose. |
Reflection
In conclusion my Organic vs Industrial piece full filled my intentions of creating an sculpture of found objects mean for industrial purposes, and allowing them to know resemble perennials or flowers, while retaining elegance and what I believe is craftsmanship. In terms of a comparison between my piece and the one I choose to take inspiration from, they are not many apparent similarities, at least in terms of structure, but I do believe that two pieces do give off the same sort of atmosphere. In terms of skills that I improved in, my ability to think creatively definitely excelled after doing this project, especially because of the lack of creative projects of this sort that I have done in the past.
